We Are a River is a collection of stories and photographs commemorating 100 years since the signing of Treaty 11 in the Northwest Territories.
In 2020-2021, Native Communications Society of the NWT, travelled to eleven communities that were commemorating the 100th anniversary of the signing of Treaty 11. Thousands of photographs were taken, dozens of interviews and videos were captured.
Due to the vast quantity of photos available, Native Communications Society, in partnership with Dene Nation and with funding from the Government of Canada, a commemorative book was produced.
Patrick Scott and Paul Andrew selected the photos from the thousands that were taken and wrote the narrative to provide some historical background on Treaty 11. We Are a River was produced in 2024 after much deliberation and dedication by many individuals.
Due to the importance of Treaty 11, copies of were distributed to all NWT schools and libraries, and to post-secondary institutions across Canada.
